Printer Chain.

This is a print chain in its storage container.
It consists of 120 print elements,
each having two print characters

Print elements are missing because this chain
was broken and cannibalised to keep other print chains in use.
The complete print chain in use was carted off and scrapped in the printer.
If only we had had the presence of mind to rescue it.

Printer Chain.

The metal type of a print chain is clamped on a thin band.
In this example the band (consisting of about 40 thin wires) has been broken,
fortuitously showing us the contruction of a print band.

Printer Chain.

This is a rear view of a print element.
It consists of the typeface component, and a rear clamping bar,
that clamped it to the flexible band using two bolts.

Printer Chain.

This is the print element disassembled.
As you can see it is the print element,
and the bar that clamped it to the print band,
plus just one of the two bolts that clamped it to the printer band.
You Can get the size of the components from the millimetre ruler.
