A print band is a loop of steel with the characters embossed on it.
This was much simpler than the chain or train
but meant that if a character became too worn
the whole band had to be discarded.
Whereas with a train or chain
individual slugs or type elements could be replaced.
The figure 0 particularly got worn down first.
But a print chain consisted of 120 type elements
each composed of the type element itself,
two tiny bolts, and a rear clamping bar with two threaded holes,
and the metal print band which itself consists of about 40 thin wires.
The cost of a print chain must have been considerable.
Whereas the Memorex print band was just one component.
The steel band was 5/1000" thick.
