Close-up view of three wire core storage.

It is even more interesting because two of the wires are broken.
Each core is threaded by a green "X" wire
and a copper "Sense/Inhibit" wire,
and at right angles to those a green "Y" wire.
It is two of the "Y" wires that are broken allowing some cores to stray.
The "Sense/Inhibit" wire is thicker that the "X" and "Y"
wires because they only have to thread one row or column,
whereas the "Sense/Inhibit" wire has to thread all the cores in the plane.
